Gloria Morti was formed in 1999 as a 4-piece thrash-metal band in Heinola, Finland. From that they have come a long road, changing their expression into a more black metal-ish way with a touch of modern death metal.
“Anthems Of Annihilation”, the third full-length album of the band, caught my eye with it’s cover art. It was hideous and lacked personality, but probably summed up the theme of the album which consists of war and stupidity of men.
The rather used marching-intro waded my mind. It felt like it had been added afterwards, which made me wonder the usefulness of the track. After the intro it all sounded promising. But I was too quick to charge. The first track was a real kick in the face with it's hellish blasting but after two more tracks pretty much alike, the album got kind of flat. Almost too predictable. A couple of catchy hooks midst the butchering would have given a nice touch and a bit more edge to it. It might have also been a good idea to cut some loose after the first one or two songs, making it easier to concentrate and really listen to the music.
The next two songs, “Obey” and “Cut From Gaia”, are the best the album has to offer. These a bit slower tracks bring atmosphere and variation to the album. There’s more air to the guitars and the music breaths, some very nice and clear riffage here! Finally you can hear the passion for playing. Of course the album is meant to be a bit chaotic, but there's no harm every once in a while to slow things down, even in this kind of extreme metal.
The partition of the album didn’t quite work for me. The last half had more nuances, but the slightly "flat" start made it hard to return back to it. In the future it might be a good idea to give more room also to the heavier and atmospheric stuff in the middle of the chainsaw battery.
The production was, without a doubt, executed professionally, but at the same time it was a bit plastic-like. More organic sounds would have done no harm. The record lacks of emotion, and it feels like Gloria Morti hasn’t found their point on this album. For me, comparing to the previous one, “Eryx”, their third full-lenght is bit of a disappointment. There is really nothing too big to complain about, but somehow Anthems Of Annihilation left me empty-handed.

I Gloria Morti nascono nel 1999 ad Heinola, in Finlandia come quartetto thrash metal. Da allora ne è passato di tempo, ed hanno cambiato il loro stile trasformandolo in sonorità più vicine al black metal, con un tocco di death moderno.
“Anthems Of Annihilation”, terzo disco in studio per il gruppo, ha catturato la mia attenzione da subito con la copertina. Era orribile e mancava di personalità, ma probabilmente questo riassume le tematiche dell'album, che riguardano la guerra e la stupidità degli uomini.
La scontata ed abusata intro marciante si è subito scagliata contro la mia mente. Sembrava che fosse stata aggiunta in un secondo tempo, il chè mi ha fatto riflettere sulla sua utilità. Dopodichè tutto pareva promettere bene. Ma sono stata troppo frettolosa a giudicare. Il primo brano è stato un vero e proprio calcio in faccia, con le sue esplosioni di ritmo infernale, ma dopo un paio di altre tracce più o meno simili, l'album diventa piuttosto piatto. Quasi troppo prevedibile. Un paio di canzoni più orecchiabili per catturare l'ascolto nel bel mezzo di questo macello avrebbe dato un tocco in più ed un pò più di incisività al tutto. Un'altra buona idea sarebbe potuta essere quella di smorzare un pò il ritmo dopo le prime due canzoni, rendendo più facile concentrarsi sull'ascolto.
I due brani successivi, “Obey” e “Cut From Gaia”, sono quanto di meglio il disco abbia da offrire. Queste tracce un pò più lente creano una certa atmosfera e danno varietà all'album. C'è più respiro per le chitarre, e la musica in generale... davvero degli ottimi riff! Finalmente si può quindi sentire un pò di passione. Certo il lavoro nel suo complesso è inteso per essere più caotico ed aggressivo, ma non fa male rallentare un pò il ritmo di tanto in tanto, anche in questo genere estremo.
La divisione in cui è organizzato il disco non mi è parsa proprio funzionare. La seconda metà è molto più variegata, ma l'inizio un pò piatto rende difficile tornarne all'ascolto. In futuro potrebbe valere la pena provare a dare più spazio alle parti più heavy ed alle atmosfere che si vengono a creare nel mezzo di questa aggressione continua.
La produzione è stata senz'ombra di dubbio professionale, ma al tempo stesso quasi un pò finta. Dei suoni più organici non avrebbero fatto alcun male. Il lavoro in sè manca di emozione, e sembra che i Gloria Morti abbiano fallito nel loro intento con questo album. Per me a paragonare questo con il suo predecessore “Eryx” è piuttosto deludente. Non c'è niente di così grave di cui lamentarsi, ma in un certo senso “Anthems Of Annihilation” mi ha lasciato direi a mani vuote.
