“Pure Negativity” is the debut album of Finnish Black Metal act Graveborne which was founded in 2008 by guitarist Marchosias and drummer Pentele. Honestly, never had chance to listen to their first demo “Astride over the Grave” which was released in 2009, so this is the very first release of the band I have ever listened.
First of all, while listening to album, you can hear every single instrument very clearly, recording of the album is done very cleverly, very good mixing and well done mastering. I have to add that instruments are played very professionally.
When we look at the music, we can say that it is mixture of melodic and straight-forward Black Metal. Mid-tempo, groovy and catchy riffs followed by blast beats with combination of dark atmospheric melodies. While you are listening to album, you can hear the “Pure Negativity” from the raw & cold voice of the vocalist: very cleverly arranged and performed vocals. On the other hand, “classical” Finnish type of Black Metal melodies hit the ears during the album. Drums are played quite straight-forward, which fits to the band’s music perfectly and what amazed me from drumming is the fact that drum fillings: I just put the music backwards and listened to some drum fillings over and over again. Additionally, Immortal influence can be felt very clearly during some parts of the album.
Over all, I have nothing negative to say for “Pure Negativity” but only positive things. Some people may think that it is not anything “special” but who cares about those people, you can feel the “Pure Negativity” even inside your bones like cold & dark Finnish winter.
