Tuska Open Air 2010 - Day 2 - 7/3/2010 - Kaisaniemen Puisto - Helsinki

--- ENGLISH VERSION ---

SATURDAY 03/07

Saturday, what a big day! Great bands to come, and great bands at the after-party too: Shining, ArthemesiA and Totalselfhatred. It takes a lot of energy to face all that, and I was already super tired. But hey, if awesome music and silly people won't cheer you up, what would? The day was as hot as hell once again, but that just means there's no need for extra hoodies and stuff.

Blake

A bit out of nowhere, in the last few years it seems the name Blake echoes more and more in big events within the finnish scene. The band played in some important festivals, and has opened the show for extremely famous artists, for example AC/DC.
Today, the band of the bald singer Aaro Seppovaara has the task to get the party started, under the burning Sun, quite funny thing if we consider the location in the “cold” Finland. The heat sure is no help, even though there is already quite a big crowd, all things considered. This can be due also to the fact that in a moment two really good finnish bands will start playing on the smaller stages.
Nice performance, however, for Blake, no big flaws, but also nothing that could blow out your mind or jump from your chair - if only I had one. Anyway these guys are right now still on their ascending curve, or so it seems from the wait towards the successor of “Sa7urnus”, which should be released before the end of the year.

(Marco Manzi)

Sotajumala

As the first band of Saturday, I was excited to see the lovely Jyväskylä's growling group from a long time. Only annoying thing was that there were two great Death Metal bands at the same time: Sotajumala and Torture Killer, which is awesome as well. That pissed me off, and also other metal heads for sure, but I went for Sotajumala, mainly cause their latest album kicks asses!
As I expected, I didn't have to regret my decision. The audience loved them and the band gave them all they got. As nice boys, Sotajumala devoted their song “Kuolleet” "to the fatties of Torture Killer". The devoted fans built up quite a mosh-pit from the encouragement. What a gig!

Torture Killer

Time for some Death Metal on both minor stages then, and maybe quite unhappy choice, or at least talked-about by the Tuska folks, since both Sotajumala and Torture Killer share pretty much the same kind of fans. Thus the audience is divided. And is hard to establish an ultimate “winner”, even though the annoying heat of this Inferno stage (as mentioned, not named like this by chance...), push maybe more people to sit on the shadowy little hill in front of the other stage - where Mynni & Co. are playing – while the singer thanks instead those who chose this “torture”.
In the tight schedule of Tuska, running from one stage to another, I can't really give my full attention to the show of the band fronted by Juri Sallinen, but from what I can see the excited fans surely don't lack of enthusiasm, pushing in the front rows, and making even more difficult to stand this damn hot weather. Quite a few songs come from the latest “Sewers”, but older tracks, such as “A Funeral For The Masses” and of course “Obsessed With Homicide” result obviously more successful.
The band confirms its fame when playing at home, and leaves surely a positive mark on this Tuska 2010. The ball now is for Hypocrisy, while hordes of metalheads move to the front of the main stage.

(Marco Manzi)

Hypocrisy

Here we are once again with Mr. Tägtgren, today on the big stage with his main band, Hypocrisy. Even if not as this winter's FME, there is still some small technical annoyance (for example when the microphone needs to be changed), which luckly is solved soon, while the band blasts the audience away with its power and the fans run amok between new songs and some of the best hits in a really interesting setlist. New are “Valley Of The Damned” and “Weed Out The Weak”, which anyway don't still create the same commotion as “Eraser”, strong bullet fired already near the beginning, or even ““Let The Knife Do The Talking”.
Peter shows once again his attachment to Finland, and the audience fully return his appreciation under this early afternoon's heat. Good performance also for Horgh, furiously blowing the “hammer” on his drums, not missing a single hit. Maybe the show is not perfect, but it hits straight on target without trouble, and this is easy to see from the reaction of the still more or less sober audience (at least for some part).
The ending as expected is enthrusted to the uber-famous “Roswell 47”, while the background is made of applauses, hails, more applauses, and an awful lot of alcohol flowing to thousands of thirsty mouths below this bright, clear sky. Once again the band lead from the swedish singer/guitarist gains a good success, but today it has to compete also with other groups which are no inferior regarding determination, energy and shape.

(Marco Manzi)

Crowbar

Not so familiar with Crowbar, I went to check them out a bit since they sounder pretty groovy in Hellfest a couple of weeks ago. Some of my friends were so excited about seeing them, so why not watch them myself too? The fans seemed to be all crazy about seeing them live. The rusty Metal-Rock combination of Crowbar sounded pretty nice but didn't made me to fall in love with their music. Quite nice festival stuff, must say.

Devin Townsend Project

Devin Townsend's happy-happy-joy-joy music fitted the sunny afternoon of Tuska like a fist to the eye.
However, is original stage charisma took over the audience for the minute he stepped to the stage. Not to mention his amazing voice and silly speaks: "Headbang you nerds!". One of my all-time favorite songs, “Hyperdrive”, was truly great even though Anneke wasn't there. In general the gig was pretty awesome. Later I heard that many grown-up dudes had difficulties of not crying like babies: tears of joy were close during the gig. I guess that tells something about the music and the gig in general. Devin was after all very expected guest and he sure met all the expectations.

Survivors Zero

The groovy Death Metal band Survivors Zero was lots of fun to the heat of Tuska. The current band of ex-Finntroll dude Tapio Wilska performed with full force and their energy spread to the audience. At least it spread to my tired little head, which was dizzy of the heat and sun. Survivors Zero is always nice to watch and hear, it's an excellent live band and in that time and place it was at it's best.

Kamelot

Roy Khan and his Kamelot today are like a small goldfish in a tank full of piranhas, however, when the band is about to get on stage all those hidden goth girls come out of nowhere to populate the front rows. And the show is, honestly speaking, among the best of this day.
The singer's charisma draws once again the attention of his (especially female) fans, and heat the atmosphere even more, as the numerous flames coming from the stage do. But Roy is not the only showman here, because even the good old Thomas Youngblood and the newly found bass player Sean Tibbetts receive their share of applauses, continuously instigating the mass.
And while I'm wondering how the singer is able to resist to this sun when he's wearing his traditional “stage suit”, I must say the gig is pretty good. Not only the famous “Ghost Opera”, with the addition of a female singer on stage, but also “Karma” and many other hits are greatly welcomed by the fans enthusiasm. There's room also for a new song, from the upcoming album, tentatively released next October.
The show's intensity makes the clock run faster, and again the final blow is provided by “March Of Mephisto”. Hats off to Kamelot, and congratulations, even though I can't really say the band is among my favourites ever, but this was objectively a great show.

(Marco Manzi)

Bloodbath

Poor Bloodbath had to play in a tiny tent which sucked, unless you we're feeling like taking a sauna including awesome music and drunken, sweaty dudes. It doesn't sound that bad said like that, but the atmosphere was very steamy, a bit too steamy since the tent was totally crowded. After seeing Bloodbath in Hellfest a couple of weeks ago, the environment bothered a bit. Anyway, the group of joyful Swedes started lively with “Ways To The Grave”. Not bad. They played some songs of the latest album “The Fathomless Mastery”, which were “Hades Rising” and “Iesous”. Nice ones, that is. This time Åkerfeld learnt that it's no use to talk swedish to the finnish audience, even though they "should" understand it. So, english this time, and the level of understanding rose about 96 % I'd say. So thank you for that!
The best moment of the gig for me was “Outnumbering The Days”. During that song my hair & head area starts to live it's own life. Last song was, once again, “Eaten”. People seemed to love it but I had had enough Bloodbath at that time and skipped it happily.

Overkill

Some misunderstanding in shooting photos to Bloodbath and Overkill (not always easy to run from one stage to the other), which share the same time on Inferno and Sue stage respectively, makes it nearly impossible to follow the show of New Jersey's thrashers, who seems to gain quite some success anyway, thanks to a gritty Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth.
Pity to have lost most of the show. But at least on the other side of the area, Bloodbath really kicked ass!

(Marco Manzi)

Nevermore

Being unfamiliar with Nevermore, I wasn't so interested on it, and after couple of songs my feelings hadn't changed. They had some good moments but it just wasn't my cup of tea. I found the singer a bit soulless and the fact that he looked like a hillbilly gone fishing, didn't help.

Saturday's best bits were provided by Sotajumala and Devin Townsend and the day had been sweet as an apple pie. More was to come, since right after Nevermore I hurried to Nosturi to enjoy some more awesome music. I felt sticky and yucky after the hot day at the sun and dirty ground, but that's part of the festival package, right?

--- VERSIONE ITALIANA ---

SABATO 03/07

Nuove sono “Valley Of The Damned” e “Weed Out The Weak”, che però non scatenano come “Eraser”, cartuccia sparata ancora all'avvio, o “Let The Knife Do The Talking”.

Alcuni miei amici erano piuttosto esaltati all'idea di vederli, quindi perchè non assistere allo show io stessa?

Niente male. Hanno suonato alcuni brani dall'ultimo “The Fathomless Mastery”, come “Hades Rising” e “Iesous”.
Momento più alto dello show per me è stato “Outnumbering The Days”.

Peccato essersi perso l'esibizione. In compenso i Bloodbath dall'altro lato hanno fatto macelli.

(Marco Manzi)

Nevermore
