Tuska Open Air 2010 - Day 3 - 7/4/2010 - Kaisaniemen Puisto - Helsinki

--- ENGLISH VERSION ---

SUNDAY 04/07

Even though I'm not old and grumpy just yet, I was happy that the Sunday was the last day of this joyful event. Not that I wouldn't love it, it's just 3 days of all kinds of activities while listening to music, plus after-parties are enough. Anyway, with shaky feet I marched to the area (scary interviews were coming!) and finally got there before the first band had even started. Yay for me!

Turmion Kätilöt

On Sunday morning (14.45 is almost morning!) there was two great groups loved by the Finns playing at the same time, Turmion Kätilöt and Finntroll. What a waste! I went with the first one which was excellent waking up music. As the first band of the day, Kätilöt woke up the audience well with their show full of energy. Their silly speeches between the songs involving the crowd got the audience going on full force. Showing their supercool dance moves and making the audience shake their bottoms like that too (and showing them, too), who wouldn't wake up? Their audience was devoted as always. I'm not sure if they did the traditional whipping thing during the song called “Kärsi”, since I had to run for an interview. Too bad!

Finntroll

Here we are on the last of these three days of festival, and I have to say that honestly I feel already dead tired. But still this Sunday offers a quite interesting schedule, starting from the most famous Finnish trolls. Streigthened by the success of the new “Nifelvind”, really good album in my opinion, the creation of its mastermind Trollhorn, today behind the keyboards even live, gathers so many people that even before the opening there's already a lot of queue waiting at the doors.
The show begins with “Nedgång”, followed immediately by the new “Dråp”. The audience goes wild immediately, and I must say that even with this super-sweat, the performance of the seven musicians is totally worth it.
The band has found from a long time its own dimension with Vreth as a frontman, and it's possible to see this from the success they always have during their live gigs, even if maybe, just maybe, with less people it would have been easier to breath... Anyway, again the fans show their devotion to the band on the notes of “Trollhammaren” and “Under Bergets Rot”, same as in the ending with “Jaktens Tid” and “Solsagan”. Some classics are missing, but all things considered, Finntroll plays quite often here at home, so we can forgive them for once. Surely a great warm-up before the coming of Blackie Lawless and his W.A.S.P.!

W.A.S.P.

The ultimate Rock moment of this three-days of music is here: Ladies and Gentlemen, it's time for W.A.S.P.!
Although years pass by relentlessly, our good ol' Blackie still looks in the same shape as a little boy, at least from what I could see in the second half of the show, since I had to miss the first part due to our Nile interview. It appears that from the latest record, “Babylon”, the band offers only one song, while I manage to get in front of the stage during “Hellion”. As mentioned, our famous rockstar is really energetic (and what great voice still!), and the same can be said of the guitarist Doug Blair, who like to show off with his original guitar, especially during “Chainsaw Charlie”.
One hour seems not enough, and very expected is the ending with “I Wanna Be Somebody”, sang along by Tuska audience altogether. Shame that the band plays so early in the running order (when the previous evening even Nevermore had more time). But if the american band keeps playing like this, I strongly suggest not to miss their shows, when you'll have a chance to see the “wasp” get to work!

(Marco Manzi)

Warmen

The side-project of Children Of Bodom's keyboardist Janne Warman offer space for many special guests, making the setlist, which focuses on the last “Japanese Hospitality”, more entertaining. And it's from the titletrack that the show begins.
Alternating on stage are Timo Kotipelto, Jonna Kosonen, Pasi Rantanen, between newer songs, the icing on the cake, represented by Journey's cover “Separate Ways”, and last but not least the final “Somebody's Watching Me” and Mr. Alexi Laiho, who comes on stage in front of an extatic audience.
It might seem strange how a band without a full-time singer could be so successful, at least among Finns, and I'm not such a big fan myself. But the crowd seems to have a different opinion, and shows this with no need to be persuaded. Nonetheless, my mind is already travelling in time and space towards Cannibal Corpse gig, which is about to start on the main stage.

(Marco Manzi)

Cannibal Corpse

One of the most expected bands of the whole Tuska had gathered quite a bunch of metalheads in the dusty field in front of the main stage. George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher was sounding like a medium-large animal as much as usual, and the riffs were hard and heavy. In few words, Cannibal Corpse performed with all their guts. I just couldn't help wondering if the people in mosh-pit stayed alive since the center of the gig area looked like Sahara's desert during a sand storm. The headbanging abilities of Mr. Fisher amazed me and my companions once again. I couldn't help but stare with eyes as big as teapots.
As the last song Corpsegrinder & pals played the evergreen “Hammer Smashed Face”, as expected. Maybe the most awaited song of the day, I'd say.

Nile

The beloved yankee group made a comeback to Tuska after two years, and got my knees weak and shaky. It was a joyful reunion for the audience and the band. They seem to appreciate the Finnish fans as much as we appreciate them. The sweet-talk for the audience was a bit too much though, but Americans like to do that I guess. Anyways, the tent was filled with enthusiasm. Nile widely played songs from their older albums and also naturally quite some of the new stuff, which worked nicely. Last but not least they played “Black Seeds of Vengeance”, which sounded just as pompous as it should. My heart still beats the most for “Lashed To The Slave Stick”. The mosh-pit activity during that was quite commendable. The gig was one of my favorites of the day and I'm quite sure that I'm not the only one thinking that.

Megadeth

"Oldie but goldie", as a friend said of Megadeth. Quite true, the middle-aged men still got what it takes. For me it was nice to see my doppelgänger (I've heard that I look like Mustaine, p.s. I'm a girl) on the stage for the first time. And there he came as “Wake Up Dead” started. The guitar hero show got immediately the furry hairs shaking around both on the stage as in the audience, as the show continued with “In My Darkest Hour”. The audience seemed to be excited as little squirrels. Happily Megadeth's setlist consisted mostly of their older material. Diamonds like “Holy Wars.. The Punishment Due” and “Tornado of Souls” were played too.
Mustaine sounded sometimes a bit animal-feminine-like but I just think it's part of his voice's attraction. The gig ended with “Symphony of Destruction” and “Peace Sells”. Nice ending for the gig and the whole Tuska.

As the festival got closer to its end, I couldn't help feeling a bit sad. The fact that I'll have to wait almost one year to get to this funny gathering of metal people felt quite devastating. This year's Tuska had been wonderful in many ways, even though I had gone through some stressful moments concerning interviews and stuff. Anyway, I loved every moment!

--- VERSIONE ITALIANA ---

DOMENICA 04/07

Urrà per me!

(Marco Manzi)

W.A.S.P.

Ed eccolo arrivare mentre inizia “Wake Up Dead”. The Punishment Due” e “Tornado of Souls”.

Comunque ho amato ogni singolo momento!
