Shining + ArthemesiA + Totalselfhatred - 7/3/2010 - Nosturi - Helsinki

Three awesome bands in one night, excluding the numerous bands of Tuska itself, yupii! The gloomy Totalselfhatred started the lovely evening and didn't disappoint me this time either. Their Black Metal-ish Doom-stuff was a pleasure to listen once again. Someone said it was just boring, and I kinda understand that since you could conceder it as angsty chill-out music. To me it works nicely live as well. Plus, it's always nice to see them live, since usually bands don't have three guitarist-growler.
Since the band had recently changed their drummer, their style had changed slightly. To me it sounded more like atmospherical doom then before, when there was a bit more black metal in it. Totalselfhatred delivered well anyway, and their song “Ruoska” is still one of my favorite angst songs.

ArthemesiA was the second band of the evening. The combination of black, folk and ambient metal worked just amazingly. They started their show with the calm “Patheme”, which gave me goosebumps. Only thing that bothered me is that there was way too little crowd there compared to the quality of the music. But as I said, ArthemesiA is way underrated. After the calm start, they continued with more speedy stuff. I think my heart skipped one heartbeat when they started to play “Valkoinen Susi”. It's one of the best songs ever. They could've played much longer on my opinion, but more awesome music was yet to come.

The main attraction of the evening was Shining. I must admit, I had listened only to a couple of their songs randomly in advance, and they had been in my must-check-these-bands-out list quite a while. Being not so familiar with the band, I didn't have any huge expectations of the gig. Nevertheless, I was anxious to see what kind of show Niklas Kvarforth & co. was about to do this time. But having seen Kvarforth on the stage once before with Den Saakaldte, I was aware what was about to go down.
Even though I didn't recognize any songs cause of my newbieness, I really liked their stuff, melancholic and kinda rough but still groovy in some way. Their new bass player seems to be kind of a second singer, which worked very nicely. A friend of mine who's a huge Shining fan thought that he's even better than Kvarforth. No comments on that, but the arrangement worked well.
Shining played also couple of their new songs from the upcoming album. Those sounded quite good, even though the guitar solos were a bit too guitar-heroish.
The show went on nicely and the musicians seemed to be a bit in their own spheres, which is normal to them I guess. Kvarforth didn't do so much freaky stuff this time, only dumped some ciggies on him, grabbed his manly parts and made out with the bass player with lots of passion. That's more than normal to him, as I've heard.

Tre ottime band in una sera, esclusi i numerosi gruppi del Tuska stesso, evviva! I cupi Totalselfhatred hanno aperto l'adorabile serata e non mi hanno deluso neanche questa volta. Ancora una volta è stato un piacere ascoltare il loro Doom dalle tinte Black Metal. Qualcuno ha detto invece che era semplicemente noioso, e tutto sommato posso anche capirlo, trattandosi di musica angosciosa e rilassante. Per me funziona comunque bene anche dal vivo. Inoltre è sempre un piacere vederli dal vivo, dato che solitamente non si vedono tre cantanti/chitarristi tutti assieme.
Siccome la band ha recentemente cambiato batterista, anche il loro stile è un po' diverso. Secondo me con un'atmosfera più doom rispetto a prima, quando c'erano più elementi black metal. I Totalselfhatred hanno comunque offerto una buona prova, ed il loro brano “Ruoska” e ancora una delle mie preferite del genere.

La seconda band della serata sono gli ArthemesiA. Fantastica la loro unione di Black, Folk ed Ambient. Il concerto ha avuto inizio con la calma “Patheme”, che mi ha dato la pelle d'oca. L'unica cosa che mi ha dato fastidio è stata il fatto che ci fosse davvero troppo poca gente per la qualità della musica. Ma a mio avviso gli ArthemesiA sono decisamente sottovalutati. Dopo un avvio tranquillo la band ha iniziato a premere sull'acceleratore. Credo il mio cuore abbia perso un battito quando hanno cominciato a suonare “Valkoinen Susi”, una delle migliori canzoni di sempre. Credo che avrebbero potuto suonare molto di più, ma altra musica meravigliosa era in arrivo.

L'attrazione principale della serata sono gli Shining. Devo ammettere di aver ascoltato casualmente solo un paio di loro canzoni prima del concerto, anche se sono nella mia lista di band da ascoltare assolutamente da un bel po' di tempo. Non essendo così familiare con questo gruppo, non avevo enormi aspettative dal concerto. Tuttavia ero ansiosa di vedere che genere di spettacolo avrebbero allestito questa volta Niklas e compagni. Ma avendo visto in precedenza Kvarforth esibirsi con i Den Saakaldte ero più o meno consapevole di cosa sarebbe potuto accadere.
Pur non riconoscendo i brani essendo nuova a questa musica, mi è davvero piaciuta, melancolica ed a suo modo grezza ma accattivante al tempo stesso. Il loro nuovo bassista sembra avere anche il ruolo di secondo cantante, cosa che sembra funzionare piuttosto bene. Un mio amico, grande fan degli Shining, mi ha detto che secondo lui sarebbe anche meglio di Kvarforth. Nessun commento a riguardo, ma penso che questo assetto sia una buona idea.
Gli Shining hanno suonato anche un paio di nuove canzoni dal loro prossimo album, che sono parsi abbastanza buoni, pur se gli assoli di chitarra mi sono sembrati un po' troppo pretenziosi.
Il concerto è proseguito in modo positivo, anche se i musicisti sembravano un po' distaccati, ma immagino che per loro sia normale. Kvarforth non ha fatto poi così tanta scena questa volta: si è solo spento qualche sigaretta addosso, afferrato i gioielli di famiglia e limonato col bassista appassionatamente. Da quanto ho sentito, per lui è normale routine.
