Metalorgy 2010 - 10/23/2010 - Nosturi - Helsinki

On the 23rd of october, a little before the doors of Nosturi were opened, I sat down with Saku Solin, the creator of Metalorgy, to talk about the tradition and the birth of it. He was kind enough to give me a moment of his time. While hearing the crowd practicing their 'dark rider' screams outside, I learned that this was already the third Metalorgy, and it will most probably grow bigger in time. Saku's band Fear of Domination was also seen on the stage this evening.
The first band, D-Creation started in time - which is almost rare on sold out metal gigs - with the keyboard intro from Devin Townsend's "Vampira". Thanks to good organizing skills, no one seemed to be behind schedule this time. Unfortunately in the beginning of D-Creation's set, there seemed to be problems with balancing the sounds. I was pleased to hear what a versatile voice the vocalist had, even though I wasn't quite with him in his way of dressing. The guy was dressed as Jesus, and he kept blessing people between the songs with his Coca-cola paper-glass. At times one could see that the band was a little inexperienced, but they played well, even though the crowd first tried to shout them down. In the end they played a not-so-good (in my opinion) Led Zeppelin cover, "Immigrant Song". The song is groovy, and I feel like there should have been clean vocals, since the synth player seems to have a beautiful and well working voice. As a non-christian I can still say she sang like an angel, which probably suits the "Jesus guy"...
The second band was Ruoska, a well known finnish industrial rock band. Of course having played for years and years their live performance worked, and their costumes were pretty much alike. Lots of zippers and black. At times the drums were too loud, and because of that I managed to mishear some lyrics. To me the singer said that "the sex is withering to emptiness". I suppose he really said something else. The stage didn't lack any muscle during this set. The rhythm was really catchy, and the crowd seemed to like what they saw and heard. I was wondering about the vocals, because there was only two microphones on the stage, but in some songs there was a harmony of 4 different voices to be heard, so this remains a play-back mystery.
After these two bands, the stage was taken by a well known goth dj, Proteus, who has been trembling the dance floors of every goth club in Finland, and various others abroad. Proteus performed with ErilaZ, another plate roller from Finland. The performance was extremely energetic, but mostly because of Proteus himself, who kept jumping infront of his table whenever he had the chance. [note to self: this guy has been stretching well!!] Nothing was wrong with the sounds, which I was very happy about. At first I have to admit I was a little sceptical about the third guy, a lonely guitar player who seemed a little out of context. But he turned out to be a cool addition to the machine-music.
Fear of Domination opened with Marilyn Manson's track made for Resident Evil, classy. But again, there was a few problems with the sound, the melodies drowned into a thick sound paste. Also the vocals were unfortunately disappearing at times, but Saku's stage performance showed that he loves what he is doing. The band always seems to have a good time together, and it shows that well. They have managed to collect a remarkable amount of fans compared to other bands that are on the same level. Their slogan was seen in almost half of the crowd's shirts: "I LOVE TO BE INSANE!". In the end, they covered the audience in the front with a shower of fake dollars, saying "100 bullshit". Collection material for some, who were gathering as many as possible, maybe in the hope of using those to buy drinks.
The main artist of the evening was of course Turmion Kätilöt, THE MIDWIVES OF DOOM! Needless to say, they had the audience at hello. This gig was special for all of us, because Turmion Kätilöt has just released a new single, "Ihmisixsixsix" (waiting for the new album next year), so new material was heard, and loved. Like always, Spellgoth was dressed in next to nothing, and obviously in a girly manner. He always brings the cherry to top of my muffin. Don't get me wrong! The whole house was marching to the songs, as the two vocalists are true showmen, entertaining their fans and involving them even to sing in choir with them. Songs like "Teurastaja" (introduced by some word-play with the audience from the singer MC Raaka Pee), "U.S.C.H.!", "Verta Ja Lihaa" sure captured the crowd, easy as a piece of cake I'd say, since most of them were here mainly to see Kätilöt. Plus the nearly-hypnotic dances of the Spellgoth sure got the attention of their fans.
The encore saw coming the awaited new "Ihmisixsixsix", which seemed very well received by the excited fans, and of course a TK concert can't end without "Kärsi"!
A great conclusion for an intense and successful show. But all the evening in general has been good as a whole - small sound issues left aside - allowing me to leave Nosturi with an happy industrial face! Thank you Metalorgy 2010, will be back next year!

Il 23 ottobre, poco prima che i cancelli del Nosturi venissero aperti, mi sono fermata un attimo a chiacchierare con Saku Solin, il fondatore del Metalorgy, a proposito della nascita di questo festival e della sua tradizione. Lui é stato cosí gentile da dedicarmi un po´del suo tempo. Mentre sentivo la folla esercitarsi nelle loro grida in stile "dark rider" fuori dal locale, sono venuta a sapere che questa era giá la terza edizione del Metalorgy, e che probabilmente diventerá un evento sempre piú grande e importante nel tempo.
La band di Saku, i Fear of Domination, si sarebbe esibita piú tardi sul palco. Primo gruppo della serata, i D-Creation, hanno iniziato puntuali - cosa piuttosto rara ai concerti metal quando si registra il tutto esaurito - con l´intro di tastiera tratto da "Vampira" di Devin Townsend.
Grazie alla buona efficienza organizzativa, nessuno é sembrato essere in ritardo stavolta. Sfortunatamente sembrava ci fossero problemi con l´audio all´inizio della performance dei D-Creation. A proposito di questo gruppo devo dire che sono rimasta stupita di sentire la versatilitá vocale del frontman, anche se non condividevo granché i suoi gusti in fatto di abbigliamento di scena. Il tizio infatti era conciato come Gesú, e continuava a benedire le persone tra una canzone e l´altra, con il suo bicchiere di carta col marchio Coca-Cola. A volte saltava abbastanza all´occhio - o meglio all´orecchio - la loro poca esperienza, ma nonostante questo, e il pubblico che inizialmente gli ha reso la vita un pò difficile, hanno suonato bene. Come conclusione della loro esibizione si sono cimentati in una - secondo me - malriuscita cover dei Led Zeppelin, "Immigrant Song", canzone originariamente piena di groove, nella quale ci sarebbe stata bene una voce pulita, dal momento che la ragazza al sintetizzatore pareva avesse una voce discreta. Da non-cristiana quale sono posso comunque affermare che lei aveva davvero una voce angelica, cosa che probabilmente legava bene con il "sosia di Gesú"....
Seconda band in programma erano i Ruoska, una industrial rock band finlandese piuttosto conosciuta. Ovviamente l´aver suonato per molti anni ha fatto sí che la loro qualitá in fatto di live fosse ormai una realtá consolidata e i loro costumi erano tutti molto simili tra loro, ovvero molte cerniere a lampo e tanto nero. A volte la batteria sovrastava il resto e a causa di ció mi sono persa alcuni pezzi di cantato...tant´é che mi é parso di sentire il cantante dire una cosa del tipo "il sesso si avvizzisce al vuoto", ma suppongo di aver capito male perché non aveva senso. Sul palco tutto é andato a meraviglia durante il set, il ritmo era davvero coinvolgente e il pubblico sembrava entusiasta di quello che vedeva e sentiva. Mi stavo chiedendo peró a proposito delle linee vocali, dal momento che c´erano solo due microfoni sul palco, ma in alcune canzoni si sentiva chiaramente un´armonia a 4 voci; misteri del play-back.
Dopo questi due gruppi, é stata la volta sul palco di Proteus, un dj goth piuttosto conosciuto che ha calcato e fatto tremare le piste da ballo di ogni goth club in Finlandia, e di molti altri paesi all´estero. Proteus si é esibito con ErilaZ, un altro disk-jockey finlandese. La loro performance era incredibilmente piena di energia, specialmente per la presenza scenica di Proteus, che continuava a saltare davanti al bancone ogni volta ne avesse occasione. [nota personale: questo tizio deve aver fatto parecchi esercizi di stretching!!]. Nulla é andato storto con la qualitá audio, il risultato é stato magnetico, e ne sono rimasta davvero colpita. Devo ammettere che all´inizio ero molto scettica a proposito del terzo musicista sul palco, una specie di chitarrista solitario che pareva essere un po´ fuori contesto. Ma alla fine si é dimostrato all´altezza e una buona aggiunta all´effetto musicale.
I Fear of Domination hanno inaugurato il loro show con la traccia che Marilyn Manson ha composto per Resident Evil, un classico. Ma ecco di nuovo il ripresentarsi di alcuni problemi coi suoni, che hanno purtroppo affogato la melodia in un impasto spesso e pesante. Purtroppo anche la voce ogni tanto scompariva, ma la performance di Saku sul palco ha dimostrato che lui davvero adora ció che fa. Una caratteristica che emerge chiaramente é che la band risulta essere sempre affiatata e questo sicuramente é un ottima cosa per la buona riuscita di un concerto; negli anni sono riusciti ad avere sempre piú fan. Il loro slogan, "I LOVE TO BE INSANE!", tra l´altro, era stampato a caratteri cubitali sulle t-shirts di piú di metá pubblico.
Al termine dello show la band ha ricoperto il pubblico nelle prime file con una cascata di banconote americane finte, che recitavano la scritta "100 bullshit". Alcuni dei presenti inoltre cercavano di accaparrarsi il piú possibile i dollari finti, come ricordo o anche per collezione, altri, probabilmente sbronzi, con la speranza di provare ad usarli per pagarsi da bere.
Artista principale delle serata erano ovviamente i Turmion Kätilöt, i “Levatrici della Distruzione”! Non c´é bisogno di dire che c´era il pienone in platea sin dalla loro prima nota.
Il concerto é stato speciale per tutti noi presenti, dal momento che i Turmion Kätilöt hanno appena pubblicato il loro nuovo singolo intitolato "Ihmisixsixsix" (in cantiere il nuovo album, la cui uscita é prevista per l´anno prossimo). Quindi abbiamo avuto la fortuna di ascoltare questo nuovo pezzo, e godercelo. Come sempre, Spellgoth era mezzo nudo, e ovviamente vestito da ragazza. Riesce sempre a mettere la ciliegina sulla torta e a conquistarmi. Ma non fraintendetemi!
L´intero locale "marciava" durante le canzoni, dal momento che i due cantanti, veri animali da palcoscenico, intrattenevano i fan e li coinvolgevano a cantare insieme a loro. Canzoni come "Teurastaja" (introdotta dal cantante MC Raaka Pee con una sorta di gioco di parole insieme al pubblico), "U.S.C.H!", "Verta Ja Lihaa" hanno sicuramente saputo catturare il pubblico. Devo dire che far andare tutti in delirio é stato un gioco da ragazzi per la band, dato che quasi tutti erano lí per vedere i Kätilöt. In aggiunta al loro grande carisma anche la danza mezza-ipnotica di Spellgoth ha catturato l´attenzione.
Prima del bis tutti erano in trepida attesa di ascoltare la nuova "Ihmisixsixsix", che ha sicuramente ricevuto responso positivo. Pezzo conclusivo della serata ovviamente é stato "Kärsi", un gran finale per uno show assolutamente ben riuscito.
In generale tutta la serata nel suo insieme é stata ottima - piccoli problemi tecnici a parte -, permettendomi di lasciare il Nosturi con una faccia "industrial" felice! Grazie Metalorgy 2010, ci vediamo l´anno prossimo!
