Deathchain + Retaliatory Measures - 11/6/2010 - Dante's Highlight - Helsinki

It was already rather late when this very tired first-time journalist came to the crime scene. At least it felt like being insanely late, as with the Academic Heavy Cruise behind me, I could’ve been home asleep already by 10 pm. Luckily I didn’t let my battle-ravaged body hinder me from being at Dante’s Highlight in time to hear the first chords from the opening act, Retaliatory Measures.
The crowd wasn’t of the easily impressionable variety obviously, since the death/thrash act from Pori only managed to draw two sweaty, semi-nude guys onto the dance floor. The rest of the people in the bar sat in their own darkened corners, safe from the ever intensifying rampage of Retaliatory Measures. The beginning of the set was ridden with mediocre mixing and sounds, and some strange technical problems, but it was clear from the start that this so far unknown band - at least to me - was there to kick ass and take names. The music was intense enough from the get-go, but it only got more and more aggressive as the set moved on. As the band got its self-confidence in check and relaxed, also the stiffness that riddled the first few songs went away. I’m not sure whether it was this change in attitude or the fact that the vocalist decided to take to the pit that got other people to finally join in and take up the foreground. There was a surge in the intensity as “Refuse/Resist” hit the audience like a well-aimed brick; Sepultura is always a good choice to get the pit going. They played even their first ever song, and quite an impressive song it was. At least to me it was clear that the faster songs were the best ones, and the slower ones did not quite have what it takes to be murderous.
Retaliatory Measures was an all-around nice warm-up act, technically professional, but the rather bland speaks and the slight stiffness on stage took some of the punch out of the show. I was however pleasantly surprised, and would’ve gotten their demo if they’d had them for sale, but it seems they have still to print those.
Before Deathchain even got their show on, the visual feast yet to come was clear: on stage there were props, a skeleton mic stand and even the Great Old One, Cthulhu itself, wandered the stage doing last-minute preparations with his Mac-book. Or it could also have been C. Void, the backing vocalist and the newest addition to the Deathchain roster. People had been slowly making their way to the venue, and when the main act finally started their set almost at midnight, the floor was much better populated than during Retaliatory Measures. In addition to being there physically, the audience was there mentally, and it didn’t take long for the chants to start. The vocalist asked whether there were people in the crowd who thought that the first record was the best, and answered his own question joking that of course they’d be wrong, since the first demo was the best! Luckily, they still played songs from all of their albums, though I would’ve wanted to see more than two songs from their magnum opus, “Deaththrash Assault”. At least they launched “Napalm Satan” onto the frenzied crowd, so I really can’t complain. Two things drew my attention the most during the show: the new facial hair of K. J. Khaos, and the somehow more intense soloing of Corpse. The first reminding me of a skinnier, somehow even more perverse Lemmy, and the latter got my attention mostly because the solos did the trick very well. The only letdown during the evening was the rather sudden end of the show, since there was no encore. This was kind of peculiar, since the audience was chanting for more and there seemed to be still time left.
Out of the several Deathchain gigs that I’ve seen, this was probably the best. The set list was nice and varied, the audience participated in making it a proper gig and the band seemed to be rather enjoying themselves. Had I not been pretty comatose, I’d have joined the furious pit at least once. Well, maybe next time, Napalm Satan 666!

Era giá piuttosto tardi quando il sottoscritto, stravolto, e per la prima volta in veste di giornalista, é arrivato sulla scena del delitto. O per lo meno sembrava che fosse incredibilmente tardi, con la Heavy Cruise dell'università alle spalle; a quest´ora sarei potuto essere giá a casa a dormire, alle 10. Fortunatamente non ho lasciato che la mia devastazione fisica mi ostacolasse dall´essere al Dante's Highlight giusto in tempo per sentire i primi accordi del gruppo di apertura della serata, i Retaliatory Measures.
Il pubblico non era ovviamente di una varietá facilmente impressionabile, dal momento che il gruppo death/thrash proveniente da Pori coinvolgeva a malapena due tizi, semi nudi e sudaticci a scatenarsi in pista. Il resto della gente al bar sedeva negli angoli piú oscurati, al riparo dal comportamento sempre piú sfrenato e violento dei Retaliatory Measures.
L´inizio del loro show era infestato da un misto mediocre di suoni e alcuni strani problemi tecnici, ma era chiaro sin dal principio che questa band – almeno per me – mezza sconosciuta, era lí per spaccare il culo e acquisire una qualche nomea. La musica era piuttosto intensa sin dall´inizio, ma é divenuta sempre piú aggressiva man mano che lo show andava avanti. E poiché la band dopo qualche istante ha acquistato piú sicurezza sul palco ed é riuscita a rilassarsi e a lasciarsi andare, anche la freddezza che aveva accompagnato le prime canzoni se n´era andata via. Non son sicuro se fosse per via di questo cambiamento o per il fatto che il cantante avesse deciso di andare in platea facendo cosí in modo che finalmente anche altre persone venissero coinvolte ed entrassero in primo piano.
Una vera scarica di adrenalina é arrivata non appena sono state udite dal pubblico le prime note di “Refuse/Resist”, un vero e proprio pezzo forte pronto a colpire; I Sepultura sono sempre una buona scelta nel coinvolgere il pubblico. La band ha persino suonato inoltre la sua prima canzone in assoluto, e devo dire che era un pezzo piuttosto interessante. Mi sembrava comunque che le canzoni piú veloci in generale fossero le migliori, mentre i pezzi piú lenti non avevano quell´aspetto accattivante e massacrante, tipico di questo gruppo.
I Retaliatory Measures in fin dei conti sono stati dei supporter piú che buoni, tecnicamente professionali, ma d´altro canto é l´insipiditá in generale che parla prima di tutto e la leggera rigitá avvertita sul palco ha fatto sí che la band perdesse qualche punto. In fin dei conti comunque sono stato piacevolmente sorpreso da loro e avrei persino comprato il loro demo se fosse stato in vendita, ma a quanto pare devono ancora stamparli.

Prima che i Deathchain inziassero il loro show, il “festino” visuale pronto a cominciare era chiaro: sul palco c´erano vari oggetti di scena, un´asta del microfono a forma di scheletro, e persino il Grande ed Unico, Cthulhu in persona, che vagava sul palco per i preparativi finali con il suo Mac-book. O forse sarebbe anche potuto essere C.Void, la seconda voce del gruppo, nonché ultimo arrivo nei Deathchain.
La gente nel frattempo stava lentamente riempiendo il locale, e quando finalmente lo show é iniziato, all´incirca verso mezzanotte, il club era decisamente piú pieno rispetto all´esibizione dei Retaliatory Measures. Il pubblico tra l´altro, oltre che essere lí fisicamente presente, lo era soprattutto mentalmente, e non ci é voluto molto prima che iniziassero i cori. Il cantante domandava agli spettatori se c´era qualcuno che ritenesse che il primo disco fosse il migliore, e ha risposto alla sua stessa domanda, scherzosamente, dicendo che ovviamente avevano torto, dal momento che il primo demo é il migliore!
Fortunatamente hanno suonato canzoni tratte da un pò tutti i loro album, anche se mi sarebbe piaciuto ascoltare un paio di pezzi in piú dalla loro opera eccelsa, “Deaththrash Assault”. Peró devo dire che hanno sferrato la potente “Napalm Satan” contro la folla frenetica, quindi alla fine non posso lamentarmi.
Due cose in particolare hanno catturato la mia attenzione durante lo show: la nuova peluria facciale di K. J. Khaos, e l´intensitá degli assoli di Corpse. Il primo dettaglio mi ricordava una versione ancora piú perversa e magrolina di Lemmy, il secondo, fondamentalmente perché gli assoli erano dei veri assi nella manica. L´unica pecca della serata é stata l´improvvisa fine dello show, senza bis, cosa piuttosto importante, dal momento che il pubblico continuava reclamarli sul palco e sembrava ci fosse ancora un po´di tempo a disposizione.
Tra tutti i concerti dei Deathchain che ho visto, questo é stato probabilmente il migliore. La scaletta era ottima e variegata, il pubblico ha attivamente contribuito nel rendere lo show ancora piú entusiasmante e la band sembrava essersi divertita sul palco. Se solo non fossi stato in uno stato cosí comatoso, sarei sicuramente saltato nel pogo furioso almeno una volta. Beh, magari la prossima volta, Napalm Satan 666!
