Electric Wizard + Fleshpress + Swallowed - 11/27/2010 - Nosturi - Helsinki

Being sold out right away, Nosturi was filled with anxious people enjoy some Electric Wizard. Since it was my first time seeing them, I was excited to see what they would have came up with in their live show. I was a bit afraid though about what it would become, since some of the all-time favorite bands sometimes don't perform as well as they could from what you expect.

Unfortunately I missed the first band, but the second two had such a blasting show that it didn't even matter anymore. The second band of the evening, Fleshpress, impressed me. I never knew that such a heady and fascinating band like that could be from Lahti, and that I didn't even know about it.
Their music totally took on oneself. Even though the songs seemed to last forever, it didn't get boring. Their set lasted only about 30 min, which was a way too short time.
When concentrating onto the music, it was like being in an other sphere. For some people it seemed to be just boring music, and I admit that in some circumstances it wouldn't work at all. But as the warm-upper for Electric Wizard it was a perfect match. Thumbs up for Fleshpress!

The venue was packed all over, and the waiting seemed to last forever. Finally the curtains were pulled aside as the band stepped in and the session of psychedelia could begin.
The set started with “Funeralopolis”. One of the songs that sticked to my mind was their new album's ("Black Masses") opening track, entitled “Black Mass”. It worked excellently: the song sounded nice and rough. The soundscape was just perfectly rusty. One of the masterpieces of the evening was “The Chosen Few”. It's hypnotic atmosphere took totally control. Also “Witchcult Today” blew my brain out.
Even though it's more than natural that people smoke weed there, I was surprised anyway from the weedy smell inside Nosturi. After all, the venue staff and authorized personnel are usually pretty strict about that stuff in Finland. The singer/guitarist Justin Oborn remembered to applaud the cheerful fellows of that. For that matter, Oborn reminded the young Ozzy Osbourne with his chubby feature and greasy-looking hair.
His original and a bit distant style of performaning was far from audience's ass kissing. The band as a whole had a low-key style and all the focus was in the music. There was some psychedelic video clips swirling on the back ground that you could centralize your hypnotized eyes into.

The night ended up being more than I was hoping for, and it was worth every penny (not like it would've been even that expensive). Since EW played widely songs from different albums, I reckon that all the fans were quite well satisfied. The set could've lasted longer though, a bit more than one hour just isn't enough for a band like Electric Wizard.

Avendo fatto immediatamente il tutto esaurito per la serata, il Nosturi era pieno di gente in ansiosa attesa di potersi godere un po' di Electric Wizard. Dato che per me era la prima volta che li vedevo, ero eccitata al pensiero di cosa avrebbero avuto in serbo durante questo concerto dal vivo. Ero però anche un po' preoccupata di cosa ne sarebbe uscito, dato che a volte le band preferite non ripagano le aspettative con le loro esibizioni.

Sfortunatamente mi sono persa la prima band, ma le altre due hanno fatto degli show così spettacolari che non aveva nemmeno più importanza. La seconda formazione in programma stasera, i Fleshpress, mi hanno impressionata. Non avrei mai pensato che una band così inebriante ed affascinante potesse provenire da Lahti, e che non lo sapessi nemmeno.
La loro musica ti prende completamente. Non è stato affatto noioso anche se le canzoni sembravano durare per sempre. Il loro show è durato però solamente mezz'ora, che penso sia un tempo davvero troppo breve.
Concentrandosi sulla musica, era come essere in un'altro mondo. Per qualcuno è sembrata semplicemente musica noiosa, ed ammetto che in alcune circostanze non avrebbe forse funzionato affatto. Ma come warm -up band per gli Electric Wizard, direi che è stata un'accoppiata perfetta. Pollici in su per i Fleshpress!

Il locale era stipato come una scatola di sardine, e l'attesa pareva durare per sempre. Finalmente si apre il sipario sul palco e la band fa il suo ingresso per cominciare questa sessione di psichedelia.
Lo show incomincia a partire da “Funeralopolis”. Ma una delle canzoni che mi sono più rimaste impresse era la opener del loro nuovo album, “Black Masses”, intitolata appunto “Black Mass”. E' stata eccezionale: suonava alle mie orecchie molto buona ed allo stesso tempo ruvida. L'ambientazione sonora era perfettamente grezza e arrugginita. Uno dei capolavori di questa serata è stato “The Chosen Few”. La sua atmosfera ipnotica ha totalmente preso il controllo di me. Ma anche “Witchcult Today” è stata esaltante.
Anche se pare più che naturale che la gente fumi erba in questo genere di concerti, ero comunque sorpresa dall'intensità dell'odore di fumo che c'era all'interno del Nosturi. Dopotutto lo staff del locale ed il personale sono solitamente piuttosto intransigenti su queste cose qui in Finlandia. Il cantante/chitarrista Justin Oborn non si è quindi dimenticato di applaudire i suoi allegri seguaci per questo. Per quel che conta, Oborn mi ricordava un giovane Ozzy Osbourne con la sua forma un po' robusta ed i capelli dall'aspetto un po' unto.
Il suo stile originale ed un po' distaccato durante la performance era ben lungi dal cercare di ingraziarsi il pubblico. In generale tutta la band se n'è stata sulle sue, concentrandosi molto più sulla musica che nell'interazione col pubblico. C'erano anche dei video psichedelici che roteavano sullo sfondo, su cui potevi incentrare il tuo sguardo ipnotizzato.

La serata si è rivelata meglio di quanto m'aspettassi, ed è valsa ogni centesimo speso (non che fosse poi neanche così costosa). Dato che gli EW hanno suonato brani un po' da tutta la loro lunga discografia, mi ricordo che grossomodo tutti i fans erano piuttosto soddisfatti. Tuttavia la setlist avrebbe potuto essere più lunga, perchè poco più di un'ora non mi pare abbastanza per una band come gli Electric Wizard.
