Exactly one month after their show in Nosturi, starting the Finnish leg of their tour to promote the new “Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa”, Moonsorrow returns in Helsinki, this time in DOM, for a very special gig celebrating the 10th anniversary from the release of their first two records, namely “Suden Uni” and “Voimasta Ja Kunniasta”. Needless to say that the whole set is focused on these two albums.
The venue is, however, not as packed as one would have thought. It’s Vappu’s fault, the main student party of the year, which leads many youngsters to start drinking in the parks of the city and partying all day long from early afternoon till the day after. It’s still part of the Finnish culture, and who am I to disrespect the traditions?
But let’s come back to the concert. To warm up the crowd is called today another local band, Brymir. Which was basically unknown to me untill the end of last summer. Since then they popped out in a few shows I’ve been attending, and I must say that everytime they seem to gain more confidence and popularity. The show sure catch the attention of the fans in front of the stage, especially the bass player seems quite restless and manage to share his enthusiasm with the audience.
The band has released his first full-lenght - “Breathe Fire To The Sun” - at the beginning of April, and is obviously eager to display its material, I would say with a good outcome. I’ve heard among the people attending the gig that quite a few were in fact surprised about the band, and I’m sure at least a few has bought their debut album afterwards.
Still roughly half hour of waiting, and finally it’s time for this, I would say, “Moonsorrow-experience”. The about-90-minutes-long set of the band lead by Ville Sorvali is, as anticipated, exclusively taken from the early days of the band. “Tyven” introduces in fact the audience to “Sankarihauta”, with the crowd going already all out as the two guitarists incite the fans.
In this darkened atmosphere created by the dim blue lights that goes very well along with the backdrop behind the stage, “Ukkosenjumalan Poika” is played among the loud cheers of the guys (and many girls) standing in the front. I have to admit that during the whole concert the sounds were pretty good, or at least beyond the expectations, and this adds to the magic of watching one of your favourite bands performing such a good show. “Kylän Päässä” and “Sankaritarina” are of course among the crowd’s favourites at this point, but it’s very good to see in between also a song like “Taistelu Pohjolasta”, coming from the ’99 demo “Tämä Ikuinen Talvi”.
This leave less space to otherwise really interesting tracks such as “1065: Aika”, or even “Suden Uni” itself, but everytime I can listen live to “Aurinko Ja Kuu” all these picky thoughts are blown away. Worthy conclusion of the show is “Tulkaapa Äijät!”, ending song of the debut album.
I have seen Moonsorrow many many times, but I have to say that this evening goes definitely into my top 3 among all the shows I’ve seen so far. I expect that one day there will be even better, but still I’m sure that me, and many of the people who were present this night at DOM, will have pretty damn good memories of this concert. Two thumbs up for this great show, and thanks Moonsorrow!
Now that the gig ended, back to join the Vappu celebrations. After all, good traditions need to be carried on!
