It seems like all the gigs I go nowadays take place in Nosturi. Well, this time it was industrial metal’s turn. Surprisingly, it was already packed before the warm-up act began their set. Black Light Discipline wasn’t really an impressive sight, they looked mostly like a cheap Pain knock-off from days past. Their music was equally unimpressive and the crowd was mostly just standing around idly.
The vocalist did try to get the audience energized, but not even his moshing and jumping really did anything. Their music simply was too low-tempo to be danced to. They did, however, get better towards the end leaving a slightly positive impression. They finished their set with a Placebo cover, an odd choice, and ending your set in a cover is a bit unimaginative.
When it was time for some Pain, the place was even more full, not quite sold-out but not far from it, I believe. The stage was quite impressive, with a very science fiction-like drum set and screens fastened to a metal background. They began with one of the few good songs from their newest, sadly mediocre, record. Peter seemed to be on top his game, with his vocals being as good as always, displaying his awesome range from clean vocals to shrieks and growls perfectly.
The mixing and sounds were a lot better during the warm-up’s set, which was a bit disappointing. The screens did add a lot to the performances, but very surprisingly they displayed some footage from the WTC attacks during one songs, which was a bit questionable, in my opinion. One of the high points came with “Suicide Machine”, one of their best live songs.
I for one didn’t know that their bass player was Finnish (or Swedish Finnish), so it was quite a shock when he thanked the band in Finnish. Otherwise the speaks were very minimalistic, with Peter saying barely anything during the gig. Towards the end of their gig they still had a few aces up their sleeve, with a special performance of “Take a drink on me”, which they played sitting down on chairs, playing semi-acoustics and with a ridiculous mini drum set. I was left unimpressed, since I for one absolutely hate that song. Luckily, they did play “Same Old Song” afterwards, which left a great after-feeling of the entire gig.
