Ozric Tentacles + Hidria Spacefolk - 5/20/2012 - Tavastia - Helsinki

Having had my neck almost destroyed by The Crown the previous evening, it was a nice change of pace to listen to some space rock. Ozric Tentacles is a legendary live band, and they’ve managed to put out a whopping 28 records since 1985. But we’re getting ahead of things, since there was also a great warm-up act.
I hadn’t actually heard Hidria Spacefolk before, though I’ve heard OF them. The first thing I noted was a pleasantly heavy guitar sound, which is not all that common in this type of music. The songs were long and instrumental with a lot of nice psychedelic elements, so it was a perfect background for some relaxing. The weren’t really all that much putting up a show, the act consisted mostly of them standing around and jamming. The exception was the keyboard player who danced and even moshed at times. The songs kept rolling, the soundscape was rich and pleasant, so all-in-all a very positive experience.
When it was time for the Ozrics to take the stage they really did manage it well. The bassist and guitarist were as laid back as they could be and were clearly there to enjoy themselves. They played a nice and varied set consisting of both new and old classics. Both the sound and the lighting were also top-notch, also there was some serious effort put into the visual aspect. They had a specialized crew taking care of the background videos and they did manage a great trippy mood with their kaleidoscopic videos.
The show was mostly stolen by the sublime bassist, whose groovy riffs kept the music going. She had quite a few sporadic speaks which made no sense and she was mostly smiling to her self. How could one not share the good mood on stage? The synth guy had his birthday and the audience even sang Happy Birthday to him in Finnish. It felt like a big family get-together, in a good way. Even though the gig was mostly awesome, there’s only so much one can take at one time, so I left at the two hour mark when they didn’t show any signs of ending the gig any time soon. But I left happy, and that’s all that matters in the end.
