It’s been a while since I’ve been on a gig. The summer and its lovely festivals are sadly behind us once again, and the black walls of Nosturi beckoned.
Famine Year surprised me with their Finnish lyrics; most grind bands do their thing in English. They combine grind, punk and d-beat to form a solid ass-kicking machine. An energic vocalist always does wonders to a band’s live show and this was again the case, though the leftist political speaks and lyrics have been heard so many times before. The song Jossain kulkee raja (”The line must be drawn somewhere”) was a definite highlight, a solid recommendation to grind/crust enthusiasts.
Hero Dishonet was a band I’ve never even heard the name of before this gig, and not surprisingly. This band definitely doesn’t follow in anyone’s tracks, but make their own path far from any roads. The intro speak says a lot; ”All this time we could be home watching porn and eating peanuts”. The band mostly behaved erraticly, with the vocalist being all over the place. They also didn’t look anything like a grind band with their more hipsterish look. The vocalist apparently truly hated his mic stand, since he threw it around, kicked it and even shoved it into his pants at one point. The gig can be boiled down to one word: entertaining.
Now for what we all were there for, Nasum. The band’s carreer was cut short with the passing of Mieszko Talarczyk in the 2004 tsunami. Now, at the band’s 20th anniversary, they get a proper way to bury the band. It took less than one beat of music to get the pit going and the crowd remained highly enthusiastic ’till the end. Nasum grinded and blasted as hard as they could, and Rotten Sound’s Keijo was a perfect choice for a replacement vocalist. They played with incredible ferocity, accuracy and groove; a very uncommon combination. The sound was really good too, with the few melodies really standing out and bringing some harmony to the chaos. This was the last time they play in Finland and I’m happy to have seen them for the first time as such a giant in their genre.
