Turmion Kätilöt + Pain - 10/17/2012 - Virgin Oil - Helsinki

It’s pretty rare that there’s a gig that I want to see at Virgin Oil, so it’s always a nice change of pace. The evening started over half an hour late, and there was a huge queue to get in, annoying.. Pain and Turmion Kätilöt share this tour, and they draw lots for the play order.
Pain started with a barrage of hits and the surprisingly big crowd was nice and responsive. The setlist was very predictable, with no surprises; just the biggest hits and a few songs from the newest album. The opening track of the newest album, Let Me Out, is a fast one, and managed to break the slightly too comfortable pace.
Turmion Kätilöt was the more energetic of the two, even if their stage show seemed a bit more confusing than usual. I could’ve sworn that part of the trash talk between the vocalists wasn’t just a part of the act, but what do I know. The set contained both blast beats and proper danceable stuff, and MC RaakaPee even got the crowd doing some disco dancing. The high point for me was Hades, which I haven’t heard live enough times yet.
Both bands suffered from predictability and slight blandness. The gig was entertaining, but they could both benefit from a new killer album and some new live tricks.
