Devin Townsend Project + Fear Factory - 11/6/2012 - The Circus - Helsinki

This was the first metal gig I’ve seen at Circus, and surprisingly the place is more suited for bands like Fear Factory than artists like Infected Mushroom or Astral Projection.
First up was Fear Factory, and they started playing to an almost empty venue. The sound was somehow heavily treble-based, which is a bit surprising when one is used to the bass-heavy sound of most metal bands. They played very precisely, but sadly that’s not the part that I will remember. The vocalist’s growls were pretty standard stuff, but dear god did his clean vocals suck! I have never heard such horrible singing live, and it wasn’t just one part or something. No, it was every time he tried to do a clean part. It was honestly worse than most karaoke singers I’ve heard, totally ludicrous. Otherwise, the fastest and the most melodic songs were the best, the ones in between were boring. Near the end of their set, which was waay too long, the crowd had increased to normal levels.
After the normal really weird Ziltoid-hosted stuff during the break between the bands, it was time for some Devin. They had put some extra effort into the stage design this time. All the players had their own illuminated podium on which to stand, and the bass drums were lined with multicolor LEDs.
They started their set with songs from the newest album, Epicloud, and I have to say that the songs really started to work for me once I heard them live. Kingdom for example is a great version of a not-so-great song of Physicist. The background videos deserve a special mention, as they were both stunning and at times hilarious, or what do you say about muppet versions of Meshuggah and Between the Buried and Me? Devin told the audience that he had actually composed Where We Belong in Finland at last year’s Tuska, which I think is pretty awesome! He also told us that he tried to pick songs that they haven’t yet played in Finland and also to vary the setlists between this gig and the one on the following day, also at Circus. Just so we don’t get sick of dtp, isn’t that nice. For me the highlight of the gig was Vampira, which I haven’t heard in ages. A great gig from a great band!
