Sabaton + Raubtier - 11/22/2012 - The Circus - Helsinki

Another metal gig in Circus, and it really isn’t as bad a venue as I thought. It was pretty much packed, but it’s nowhere as claustrophobic as Nosturi or Tavastia is when they are this full.
I saw the latter half of Raubtier’s gig, and the main sentiment has to be confusion. They are the perfect band to play with Sabaton, since they are sorta Sabaton Light; they are Swedish, they clearly draw influence from them and their stage presence is also pretty heavily taken from their brothers in arms. The did their speaks in Finnish which was surprising, until a friend told me they are from Haparanda, right on the Finnish border. They had put some effort into their stage decorations, I especially enjoyed the drums that looked like artillery guns.
The performance was a bit off, though. I couldn’t make out anything of the vocals, it took me four songs to determine even the language. Their songs are pretty straightforward and plain, but unlike e.g. Sabaton’s songs, they really didn’t seem catchy at all. The final song was a bit of an odd-one-out as it had Nintendo sounds and everyone just bounced around on stage. Wtf?
Straight from the get-go, Sabaton mostly annoyed the hell out of me. They once again had not one, not two, but THREE intros, including Final Countdown. It might’ve been a joke the first time around, but they’ve done it every time for fuck sake! They started the gig with Ghost Division, like always. The worst blow came when they played Carolus Rex in English, and not in Swedish like last time. I don’t know why, but I clearly wasn’t the only one pissed off by this move, since the line in the bar doubled at this point.
Their normal drummer is having a kid, so they had the drummer from King Diamond standing in for him. The only part of the gig that wasn’t just repeating their old manners was when Joakim had a keyboard brought in and played various snippets from Van Halen’s Jump and ABBA. It was nice hearing him play the keys, since he’s really good, at least to me. Then at the end they did again the YMCA dancing with the crowd, which admittedly was pretty entertaining.
To summarize, I love Sabaton, but they are starting to seem a bit old. They mostly repeat the same songs, patterns and speeches, and having seen them several times it does get old. I hope they come up with something new soon!
