Kreator + Morbid Angel + Nile + Fueled By Fire - 12/7/2012 - Nosturi - Helsinki

(Just a heads up, I really enjoyed this gig, so there might be some hype :D)
I was surprised by the amount of people seeing the warm-up act, a band I’d never heard of: Fueled by Fire. Once I heard them play I was surprised no more, they sure could shred. Old school thrash from LA and done really well too! The riffs reminded of the classics and the occasional shrieks were awesome, so a really great positive surprise, and definitely worth a look.

I missed the first songs of Nile, but boy was the rest of the gig awesome! First things first: no matter how much I love the band they’ve always sounded shit live. But not this time! Not even close. I have no idea what they’ve done but somehow the same songs in the same place a few years apart sounded incredibly different: the bass was clearly audible and one could actually distinguish between guitars and vocals. They finally sounded both brutal and technical live, and I hope I see them many more times with this setup. After the mystery departure of bassist Chris Lollis they have a new bassist, and they’ve also returned to having Dallas (who totally looks like Devin Townsend nowadays) as the front-man. This somehow just feels a lot better than any other combination. They played several new songs from “At the Gate of Sethu” and finished with “Black Seeds of Vengeance”, which all sounded kick-ass.

Next up was Morbid Angel. Dave Vincent’s charisma combined with a nice light show made for a cool performance. The songs from “Altars..” worked really well, but the newer ones left me cold like usually, except for “Existo Vulgoré”, which was perversely entertaining. It’s just ridiculous how precisely and exactly these old guys can play such fast music after all these years. Especially Trey’s solos and twisted leads never fail to impress.

Last to play was Kreator. The stage was covered by a white cloth, where segments through the years were projected, with even Johnny Cash’s ”Personal Jesus” playing in the background. There was a huge pit, from wall to wall basically, from the very beginning. Especially the guitar sound was right on the spot, and the playing itself was of course impeccable. They played only new songs first and then launched into ”Extreme Aggression” just as it fit the mood best. The crowd seemed very enthusiastic and there was even a wall of death, a lame one with slightly off timing, but a WoD anyways. Sami played some acoustic guitar near the end and made the set even further diverse.

This was definitely the best gig I’ve been in ages, I’m so glad I managed to see it with the gig being sold out in an instant.
