Killswitch Engage + Sylosis - 4/16/2013 - Circus - Helsinki

Mid-April in Helsinki and it’s barely snowing anymore, yay! This time i witnessed a very rare occurrence, a gig that was ahead of schedule. Initially I thought that the band playing was the first warm-up act Heartist, but after a while it was clear I was watching Sylosis, and they just had started over 15 minutes early. The first thing I noticed was the aggression and their intensive vocals and playing. Cue a huge wall of death and I can say that the crowd were enjoying themselves. All-in-all, a good balance of heavy and melodic riffing, fast and slow songs and avery enjoyable whole. Definitely a band worth checking out, both live and on record.

It’s five years since Killswitch Engage played in Tuska, and a lot has happened since. Vocalist Howard Jones left the band a year ago and was replaced with original vocalist Jesse Leach, who was now in Finland for the first time. Having listened to the new album extensively and now seen them live I can say that the return of Jesse is the best thing that could have happened to KsE. His stage charisma and sheer intensity kept the crowd electrified; it’s rare to not be able to hear the choruses ’cos the crowd’s singing so loud. Add to this Adam Dutkiewicz’s usual borderline retarded antics and you have a very entertaining whole. The setlist consisted in addition to the mandatory hits of old songs and a couple of brand new ones, of which In Due Time was the best in the set. A really good gig from an awesome live band.
