Engel + Avatar - 5/18/2013 - Nosturi - Helsinki

I hadn’t heard of Avatar before, and upon entering Nosturi it seemed like nobody else had heard of them either considering how few people there were. I can’t remember there ever being this small a crowd in all my times at Nosturi. Only the vocalist had makeup, which made it easy to just focus on him and made the whole show feel slightly more twisted. The band has this circus theme, and combined with the ringleader vocalist, a circus tent style backdrop and a light sign with the band’s name on it, they do set the mood a lot more than normal bands. They played only one song from their older albums, and that one at least had a lot more aggression than the newer songs. The addition of clean vocals that ranged from boring to awesome sort of did mix things up, but still seemed out of place. An entertaining act, but musically forgettable.

During the break I watched some Eurovision Song Contest on the TV in the coatroom, a slight contrast to the bands playing tonight. It seemed like there were even less people when Engel started. They only had one guitarist, since the other one quit a little while ago, and they also had a new singer, so a lot has changed in the year between this gig and their newest album coming out. Engel being from Sweden, they thought that it would be a good idea to taunt the audience with Sweden’s victory over Finland in ice hockey earlier the same day. Brilliant idea, I gotta say. Way to alienate the few people who actually came to see your show.. They played a cover of Youth Gone Wild and had a acoustic song, but compared to the more energetic and twisted Avatar they just seemed a bit... boring. In the future, I think I will enjoy my Engel in album-form, as I have done so far.
